about Ashton.
Ashton has a sad story, but don’t tell
him – he thinks life is great!!! In
April 2011, he was found living at a
dump and had most likely been there a
very long time. Thankfully a lady saw
him and took him to the vet and they
contacted SLR. Ashton was in terrible
shape. He was very skinny and had eye,
ear, and skin issues. He was so matted;
no one realized he was a schnauzer until
he was shaved down. It was also
discovered that Ashton is nearly deaf
and can only hear very loud sounds. He
was neutered and brought up to date on
all his shots. Thankfully he was
heart-worm negative and is now on HW
Preventative.
Today Ashton is doing well. His eye, ear
& skin infections are healed. He does
have arthritis and a heart murmur. He is
on medications for both and will need to
be for the rest of his life. There is
just one pill for each and he only takes
them once a day. I just add to his food
and he gobbles them down as he eats.
He is a little wobbly at times but
Ashton does not let that slow him down
one bit. He lives every day with his
tail wagging & a smile on his face. He
is one of the sweetest dogs you will
ever meet. Ashton is happy and loves
waking up in the morning to see what the
day holds for him. He plays, runs, and
has a healthy appetite. He gets along
great with other dogs and cats. He
greets every one (both two & four
legged) with his tail wagging. He loves
to sit on your lap or sleep with you in
bed. But you will have to pick him up to
put him on your lap or in bed with you
and you’ll need to set him back down so
he doesn’t get hurt.
The only time he barks is when he is
playing and then it’s only a couple of
happy barks. I think he cannot hold in
the happiness he is feeling and just has
to shout out how much fun he is having.
Other than that, he is quiet as a mouse.
He is housebroken, but needs to go out
routinely as it is hard for him to “hold
it” for very long periods of time. He
should be let out at least every 4
hours. If you take him out right before
bedtime – he will sleep through the
night without a problem. But be sure to
take him out first thing when he wakes
up.
Since he doesn’t hear well, you need to
keep a close eye on him and he should
never be outside unless he is on a leash
or inside a fenced yard. Ashton enjoys
other dogs and would benefit from being
in a home with another dog or dogs. I
don’t think he would be happy unless he
had a buddy to hang-out with. Plus
another dog helps him to understand the
things he misses by not hearing.
The vet estimates Ashton age to be close
to 11 years old. Ashton is a dog that
will touch your heart and you will never
forget him. Everyone who meets Ashton
falls in love with him. After all that
he has been through he is still gentle,
sweet, affectionate, and happy. He will
be an absolute joy and blessing to any
home.
Ashton will require a very special home,
but he is a very special boy and so
worthy of all the love anyone can give
him. |
